Podium high for Gary in Austrian round of DTM

Posted 3rd August 2015

Gary Paffett, racing the EURONICS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM with the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team came home seventh in the first of the two races at Spielberg in Austria and celebrated a podium finish with second place in heavy rain on Sunday, his 35th podium finish of his DTM career.

Gary said after the first race, "That was a hard, close race. Unfortunately, Robert Wickens had a problem at the start and so I lost a bit of time behind him before I got past. That meant that I had no DRS behind Farfus, which enabled Mattias Ekström to get past me - I couldn't do anything to fend him off. After that, I had a decent battle for position with Marco Wittmann. I pulled out a lead of one second on him, and then I was just pushing flat out the whole race, trying to maintain the gap. P7 is okay based on the race, but the pace is there, so let's hope for more tomorrow."

A total of 52,000 spectators came through the gates during the weekend to watch the two races. The second race was staged in difficult weather conditions and had to be started behind the safety car due to heavy rain.

Gary said after the second race, "That was a very good race. It would, of course, have been even nicer to finish on top, but Matthias and I pushed each other. I got closer and closer to him and thought I'd catch him, but then he countered and so, it was obvious that it wasn't going to be possible. It was a tough race in difficult conditions, but I'm pleased with the result."

Gary now lies fifth in the DTM Drivers’ Championship. The DTM season continues with the sixth round of the championship taking place in Moscow from 28 to 30 August.
