Tough weekend for Paffett in Hungary
Posted 26th September 2016
Gary Paffett endured a weekend of damage limitation in the penultimate round of racing in the 2016 DTM season in Hungary. The eight Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM touring cars were the heaviest in the field which played a crucial role on the twisty Hungaroring circuit as Paffett had to ultimately contend with a P21 finish on the Saturday and a P18 finish on Sunday.
Gary’s chances of success on Saturday were inhibited as his qualifying performance was hampered by the weight of the car. Eventually bringing his car home in P21, Gary reflected on a dramatic turn of events that prevented him from competing further up the grid.
“It was obvious right from the outset that it would be a tough race given our grid position. My start was okay, but I had a Spengler in the first corner which cost me quite a few positions. After that, several cars spun in front of me in Turn 2 and I had to avoid them, losing even more places. Unfortunately, our car was not quick enough today. We need to work on it for tomorrow.”
Sunday brought with it a slight improvement for the vastly experienced Paffett but unfortunately, the team had too much ground to make up.
“Whenever you line up so far down the grid, it always means plenty of hard work in the race. I made an excellent start and moved up a few positions in the first turn. I was subsequently forced well over to the outside in Turn 2 and lost the places that I had won as a result. That was very unfortunate. The car felt okay today, but we were simply too far behind at the start to do more."
Next up for Paffett, he heads to Hockenheim between the 14th and 16th of October as the final curtain falls on the 2016 DTM season.
